The Pear Film

A six-minute film made at the University of California at Berkeley in 1975 and shown to speakers of a number of languages, who were asked to tell what happened in it.  See Wallace Chafe (ed.), The Pear Stories: Cognitive, Cultural, and Linguistic Aspects of Narrative Production. Norwood, New Jersey: Ablex (1980). If you have Internet Explorer, you can click twice on the small box below to begin downloading the film. It may take several minutes, depending on the speed of your computer. When a large black box appears, move the cursor into it to start the film. Move the cursor out of the box to expunge the small box in the upper left corner. Click on any link above to stop the film.
It can also be viewed at http://pearstories.org, a website constructed by Mary S. Erbaugh, with special attention to Chinese pear stories.
